August 16-24: This is our first week of second grade! We've completed some fun getting-to-know-you activities, including a scavenger hunt and an art project. We're also reviewing parts of speech (nouns, adjectives, and verbs) and beginning some math activities with number lines. We will also read and discuss our Anchor Text, Henry and Mudge, from our new Journey's textbook. We will also compare it to a non-fiction piece, The Best Pet. We need to work on writing complete sentences, and an opinion writing piece about our favorite pets. This story lends itself to many fun projects that you will be able to see at Back-to-School-Night, Wednesday, September 5th.
September 4-8: Great job remembering library books today! We go to the library each Tuesday. This week we are reading an informational text called Dogs. We will compare/contrast information as well as work on sentences that are statements and questions. All of our spelling words this week follow the vowel consonant e pattern, thus making the long vowel sound. In math we are working on making tens. This is an important concept in second grade that helps students add and subtract quickly. Back-to-School Night is tomorrow. I'm so excited to see you and tell you all about 2nd grade!
September 17-21: This week’s story is Teacher’s Pets and the paired selection is See Westburg by Bus. Students are encouraged to share a photo of their own pet(s) with the class to promote listening and speaking skills. Please practice what they will say before sending it in. We will display the pictures in the classroom. We will also begin Unit 2 in math so be on the lookout for the Home Links letter this week. Keep that handy so you can help your child with any math homework.
